Vedantu is an edtech company specializing in science and mathematics. They commissioned a sample chapter for Tatva - the Textbook of the Future. The basic idea was to use QR codes to integrate videos, quizzes and 3D models with the base textbook content.
The first step in this project was going through the prescribed syllabus multiple times until I understood every single detail. Once I was confident with the material, I proceeded to categorize it according to type: Base content, Fun facts, Diagrams and captions, Tables, Quick questions, and additional content accessible through QR codes. The additional content was further divided into short videos that explained a concept, games that tested understanding of a concept, interactive diagrams and 3D models, and longform quizzes. Each of these needed their own icons and associated prominent colours.
The orange seen in titles and dividers is from the company’s logo. This was selected as the overall dominant colour. Apart from that, I selected colours that were soft yet vibrant, making sure they were distinct enough from each other, so the students could easily identify content type.
The whole process took over 30 iterations with different icons, fonts, illustration styles and layouts. Through this project I developed a love for science communication. There is a vast wealth of knowledge in the scientific community that most people do not appreciate, until it is brought to them in a memorable and engaging format.
